In 1999 British Waterways Scotland commissioned a consortium including Binnie, Black & Veatch, Ferguson & McIlveen and Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd to develop an exemplar design for a canal interchange at Falkirk. The interchange includes the extension of the Union Canal, three locks, a tunnel, aqueduct, wheeled boatlift and holding basin. From the holding basin there is direct access to the Forth & Clyde canal.
The Millennium Link was a £78 million project, which included £32 million from the Millennium Commission and funding from Scottish Enterprise and the Local Enterprise Network, seven local councils, the European Regional Development Fund and British Waterways.
Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd were responsible for the development of the Wheeled Boatlift. The development work included conceptual development, finite element analysis, wind tunnel testing and systems analysis.
The work was complete in 1999 resulting in a contract being let for the detail design and building of the boatlift.
