Andritz - Hydro Project Management Director (June 2008-September 2010)
Following the sale of GE Energy’s global Hydro assets in June 2008 I had the responsibility of completing a portfolio of 30 projects, predominantly based in Europe but others in Africa, Korea and South America. This process is now complete and both commercial and practical closure has been achieved on the vast majority of the projects with an increased profitability across the portfolio. On completion of these projects I was asked to close the Andritz hydro operations in the UK.
Key Achievements:
- Set-up new UK office base
- Established major service contracts and resolved related disputes following the acquisition by Andritz
- Completed a complex portfolio of projects with improved financial result
- Settled major customer and supplier disputes with minimal impact on overall project portfolio
- Designed and implemented a new cost reporting system across four entities in three countries
- Prepared major sub-contractor claim to recover costs for warranty repairs
GE Energy (UK) - Managing Director (December 2003 June 2008)
Shortly after taking on the role of Managing Director I was given the responsibility for completely re-organising the UK operations with a staff reduction of sixty percent. The prime requirement being to align the Company’s strengths and staff profile to handle the expanding Scottish hydro refurbishment market. Combined with my duties as Global Installation Manager I also managed the Company’s accreditation to ISO 9000:2000 using web-based tools to map all business processes. In the later stages of this period I sold the GE owned building and negotiated the sale and lease back of a reduced space.
Key Achievements:
- Re-structured Company of 115 people to realign with GE Hydro’s global organisation
- Maintained staff morale through a turbulent period of change
- Re-organised GE owned office building to prepare for sale and lease back of reduced space
- Achieved ISO 9000:2000 accreditation
- Re-organised the global installation site staff to better manage the available resources and cater for re-structuring in other GE Hydro head office locations
- Awarded three consecutive and substantial GE share options for merit and performance
GE Energy (UK) - Global Installation Manager (October 1999 November 2003)
During this period of change, following the acquisition of Kvaerner Boving by GE, I retained the role of Contracts Director while taking on the new role of Global Installation Manager. This gave me responsibility for the global installation work of all six GE Hydro locations across Europe, North America and Australia. As a result I had 145 direct staff on 45 sites around the world.

- Lead initial integration of the Kvaerner and GE installation teams
- Defined development objectives of global installation team (methods, processes, conditions)
- Introduced common contract reporting methods across all sites
- Established cross use of personnel on sites to better utilise the depth of experience at each location
- Managed £75M international and domestic project portfolio
- Retained key staff throughout the acquisition
Kvaerner Boving Ltd - Contracts Director (January 1998 October 1999)
Responsible for the management of the Contracts Division including project management, site construction, spares and refurbishment activities. Staff of 35 office based staff and 15 direct site based Engineers.
Key Achievements:
- Managed £75M international and domestic project portfolio
- Developed existing cost reporting techniques
- Negotiated 3 major claims with international clients, consultants and insurance companies. Total claims value approximately £5m across three projects
- Involved in post-acquisition integration for GE Hydro Projects function
Kvaerner Boving Ltd - Project Manager, Pergau Hydroelectric Project, Malaysia (May 1993 December 1997)
Resident Project Manager for the installation and commissioning of 4 off 150 MVV Francis turbines, Main Inlet Valves, Intake Gates, Draft Tube Gates, Radial Gates, Pumping Station Water Control Equipment and numerous station and project auxiliary systems.
Project scope value £22M.
Key Achievements:
- Developed installation techniques with the Civil Contractor to reduce programme by 6 weeks per unit
- Completed turbine builds 10 months ahead of programme
- All Kvaerner Boving Limited’s scope completed ahead of time and to original budget
- Managed £4M of local Malaysian manufacture
Kvaerner Boving Ltd - Project Manager, Owen Falls Power Station Rehabilitation, Uganda (August 1989 April 1993)
Resident Project Manager for three contracts covering the complete refurbishment/replacement of the original mechanical equipment, including 10x18 MW vertical Kaplan turbines, intake gates and hoists, screens, bulkheads, cranes and power station auxiliary services.
Project value £10M.

- Improved profitability on gate contracts by 50%
- Re-negotiated turbine contract improving profitability by 20%
