Shoreham Harbour is a successful commercial port on the South coast of England. The harbour is served by two access locks one of which had fallen into dis-use. The overall project involved the modification of the disused dock to include new single leaf sector gates so as to act as a leisure boat lock.
Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd worked directly with the Gate Contractor to develop the structural, mechanical and electrical design of the Sector Gates, and their associated control and operating systems. The Gates are the first single leaf type Sector Gates to be installed in the United Kingdom, and possibly the World.
In order to minimise the elapsed time taken to sluice during locking, an "intelligent" sluicing control system was developed which automatically adjusts the position of the gate leaf in accordance with the head of water across it. This solution provides the absolute minimum sluicing time, commensurate with vessel safety under all conditions, and represents a technical first.
The gates are controlled directly from a central control building. In addition, a set of stop logs and a pedestrian walkway were designed in order to maintain the gates in future periods.
