Sentosa North is an exclusive development off the coast of Singapore, in which a combination of luxury houses with boat moorings has been built. The developers acting for the Government of Singapore appointed Royal Haskoning to design a pair of locks to connect the canal system to the sea. Royal Haskoning retained Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd (KGAL) to develop a state of the art control system and hydraulic operating system for the gates.
The system can be used in three modes of operation, namely centrally controlled from a main desk, locally controlled from the lock side and radio controlled by the boat skippers using specially developed hand-held controllers.
KGAL devised and specified the special software required to cope with the automatic nature of much of the lock working. Engineers were also provided to assist the local manufacturers with the standards required for the work.
The system incorporated special protection against electrical storms which are prevalent on the island.
The system was commissioned in 2000 to the satisfaction of the client who has since retained Royal Haskoning and KGAL to develop a similar system for a second development known as Sentosa South.
