Ro-Ro Linkspan, Scrabster Harbour

Scrabster Harbour is the most Northerly port on the mainland of Scotland. In 2001 Babtie Consultants was appointed by the Scrabster Harbour Commissioners to develop an extension to the port including a vehicle linkspan and a passenger walkway for visiting ferries.

KGAL was employed by Babtie Consultants to develop the mechanical and electrical specification for both the drive and control systems for the two structures.

A contract was let to Intertec A/S of Denmark for the construction of the linkspan. KGAL was employed to approve their detailed controls design and oversee works testing and commissioning.

The vehicle linkspan is 40 m long and 11.4 m wide and is operated via twin hydraulic cylinders at the free end. A system for monitoring and controlling cylinder synchronisation is present along with a number of alternative operating systems to ensure that a high level of reliability is available.

The photograph shows the linkspan under construction.
