Relevant Project Experience - Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd
Swansea SA1 Marina Sector Gates, Stop Logs, and Sluicing Culverts Retained by White Young Green to design a dedicated sea lock providing access to the new marina development. The sea lock will have a clear opening of 12.5m and a maximum height of 13.3m. The lock barrel will be 50m long with a clear width of 15.5m. The lock will be equipped with an Inner and Outer pair of sector gates. The KGA brief was to provide complete workshop drawings for mechanical parts and specifications for all mechanical, electrical and hydraulic parts and to liaise with the civils designers. Work included the finite element analysis of gate structures.
In addition a set of stop logs with an associated lifting beam were designed, these can be utilised to dam either the Inner gate marina side or Outer Gate seaward side. Side sluicing culverts with electrically actuated penstock gates, culvert stop logs and culvert trash screens were also designed.
Al Khiran Flap Gates, Pearl City, Kuwait Flap Gates Retained by Buro Happold to design flap gates to control the back surge of tidal water around the waterway system of a new luxurious housing complex being built at Al Khiran, Pearl City. The contract also includes the design of stop logs, stop log storage racks, stop log lifting beams, and suitable jigs for aiding installation of parts. The contract involved the submission of drawings, calculations and applicable design documentation.
Essex Mills Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake surveys of various sluice structures around the Essex region.
o Benton Hall o Blue Mill o Bocking Mill o Flatford Mill o Stistead Mill
Each site consisted of a set of sluice gates (ranging from one to six) and lifting equipment which no longer met the latest health and safety requirements. Each site was surveyed, a new design was produced and the equipment has already been installed on a number of the sites.
Canvey Island Gravity Sluices Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake the design for the upgrading and refurbishment of seven sluice structures within the Canvey Island catchment area.
o Tewkes Creek tidal sluice o Evacuation Sluice o 60 Acre Sluice o Hilton Pumping Station o Golf Course Sluice o Northwick Tidal Sluice o Holehaven Tidal Sluice
The design included replacement penstocks with electrical actuators, flap valves, decking and ladders. Also included were new bulkhead gates with lifting gantry.
Tilbury Barrier Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake the design of replacement support roller modules incorporating heavier duty spherical roller bearings, stiffer mounting brackets, temperature compensating assembly and efficient sealing arrangement. The Method statement was developed for correct assembly and adjustment of the bearing assemblies.
Cley-Next-The-Sea Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake the design of steel Mitre gates to replace existing aged timber gates. Recyclable materials were used where practical. A GRP walkway over the gates when closed was also included in the design.
KGAL also prepared the tender documents and specifications together with the tender adjudication model. Tender adjudication was carried out and a final report giving KGAL's recommendations was submitted to the Environment Agency. Contract Management of the winning contractor was awarded to KGAL.
Dedham Mill Retained by the Environment Agency to design a replacement gearbox to operate each of the six off sluice gates at Dedham Mill. The design brief stated that the outward appearance of the gearboxes should be in keeping with the Sluice structure circa 1860. A worm & wheel combination was selected and incorporated within a gearbox casing which mounted on the existing structure. Electrical actuators were also specified to replace the original manual operating handles. East Mills, Colchester Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake a condition survey of the East Mills hydraulically operated tilting gates, civil structure, electrical system and hydraulic system under the Inspection of Flood Defence Structures Framework (IFDS). All of the equipment was surveyed and a complete refurbishment program report was produced. Sutton's Boatyard Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake the design of a replacement sealing arrangement on the flood defence mitre gate at Sutton's Boatyard in Great Wakering, Essex.
Gores Brook, Dagenham Retained by the Environment Agency to undertake the outline design for the upgrading and refurbishment of the Gores Brook Tidal sluice inspection chamber and outfall structures. The design included replacement penstocks with electrical actuators, replacement flap valves, flap valve lifting winches and lifting equipment, decking, access ladders and rescue davits.
