The Environment Agency own and operate a pair of mitre flood gates at the entrance to the Ipswich Wet Docks. The mitre gates play an important role in forming part of the flood protection works for Ipswich and are closed when specific adverse tide and weather conditions may cause flooding.
In 2000 the Agency instructed Black and Veatch to develop a design for upgrading the oil hydraulic and control systems. Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd was retained to undertake the mechanical and electrical aspects of the project.
KGAL undertook a survey and performance calculations to enable them to size the drive cylinders. The developed design involved the extension of Associated British Port's existing dock equipment to be capable of also driving the floodgates.
KGAL produced a performance specification for the extension equipment. They also let and project managed the contract for the works, which were commissioned in 2000.
