Osprey Quay, PortlandOsprey Quay, in Portland, houses the regional coast guard and helicopter rescue service. Portland has had a perennial, historical, flooding problem and a flood defence scheme was developed by consultants White Young Green in association with the South West Development Authority. Within the flood defences, a stout flood defence wall was built to secure the coast guard site. The wall needed to have an opening capable of allowing the Sea King helicopter to taxi through and yet still be secured in times of flood. Taylor and Sons Ltd., of Cardiff, won a contract to build and install the flood defence, mitre access gates and KGAL was retained by them to develop the functional and detail design of the equipment. The flood defence mitre access gate is of the mitre type with retractable bottom seals. All operations are powered using an hydraulic system based on bio-degradable oil. The system is controlled directly by P.L.C. based electrical controls from a central control panel. The system incorporates a degree of redundancy to ensure that the probability of being able to close the gates under conditions involving component failure is very high. The mitre access gate incorporates an adjustment system that will enable it to be realigned in the future should there be any settlement in the civil engineering. The mitre access gate was successfully commissioned in 2004. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
