Wheel Gates

Principally used as a means of flood control in both river and tidal structures, also used on hydro-electric schemes as intake and draft tube gates. Caterpillar gates and "Stoney" gates are others of this type using rollers instead of fixed wheels.

  • Advantages
    • High discharge capacity.
    • Lifting loads greater than Radial gate less than Sliding gate.
    • Simple in operation.
    • Can be raised above pier level for maintenance.
    • Can be lifted and lowered under unbalanced head.
    • Can be large span up to 40m or high head tunnel type.
    • Can be plate girder, truss or box girder type.
  • Disadvantages
    • Bottom lip profile is critical to reduce vibration.
    • More complex than a simple slide gate.
    • Large side groove causes flow disturbance.
