Career History:
  • Trained as a Mechanical Engineering Design Engineer via five year technical apprenticeship;
  • Undertook a number of Technical Positions of increasing responsibility leading to Technical Director of Biwater Hydropower.  During this period had total responsibility for all Technical, Project Engineering and Commissioning for over 200 water control gates and associated equipment;
  • Developed career path into Marketing and Sales before becoming the Managing Director of a Water Related capital equipment Company in the Biwater Group.  During this period acted as Chairman of Biwater Group's Marketing Co-ordination Committee and travelled extensively on their behalf.   Was a Director of the Group's French subsidiary;
  • Started Kenneth Grubb Associates in 1991 to undertake Consulting Engineering work in the water-engineering field.

Relevant Project Experience - Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd

Afon Dafen Tilting Gate

Designed a 10 m x 4 m Tidal tilting gate at Afon Dafen for GEC Alsthom Neyrpic Ltd.  The gate is operated via a single hydraulic cylinder on one side of the installation.  Responsibilities included the complete hydraulic and electrical operating and controls package.  Also included one set of stop logs complete with automatic lifting beam.

Abbey Mill Fishbelly Gate
Provided complete M & E service to the Civil Engineering Consultant Mouchel Consulting Ltd, from feasibility study, through the writing and letting of a contract to the design approvals process, works inspection and site Clerk of Works service.

The scheme, for the National Rivers Authority Severn Trent Region, involved the replacement of two existing water control gates with a single overshot fishbelly gate, 19 m wide x 3.6 m high.  The site was adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a grade 2 listed building, and required sensitive development at all times.  Full telemetry linked, remote monitoring and control features are present.

Sovereign Harbour (Formerly Crumbles Harbour Village), Eastbourne
Retained by the Gate contractor, GEC Alsthom Neyrpic Ltd, to design:
  • Design of two Marina Sector Gates 10 m wide x 11.5 m and 8 m high.
  • Design of two sets of stop logs 10 m wide x 11.5 m high.
  • Design of a 7 m wide x 10 m span twin bascule vehicle bridge to BS 5400.
  • Design of two 2 m wide x 10 m span twin bascule pedestrian bridges to BS 5400.
The gates form part of the flood defences for Eastbourne.

Together with all electrical supplies and functional controls.

Shoreham Port Authority
Retained by the Gate Contractor, GEC Alsthom Neyrpic Ltd, to design:
  • Set of Single Leaf Sector Gates, together with an "intelligent" sluicing system designed to match sluicing performance to the active hydraulic head.
  • Design of a set of three stop logs together with an automatic lifting beam.

Avon Sluices (Phase 5)
Retained by Mouchel Consulting Ltd, on behalf of the Environment Agency Midlands Region, to undertake condition survey of four sites on the river Avon, leading to the development of an M & E specification for refurbishment works.  The scheme includes remote telemetry links.

Llyn Eigiau Fishbelly gate
Retained by National Power to design a 15 m wide x 1.2 m high fishbelly gate for controlling releases from the Llyn Eigiau reservoir.  The work included the finite element analysis, structural design, and full mechanical and electrical controls specification.

The gate includes remote monitoring and control from the Dolgarrog power station.

Milford Haven Mitre Gates
Retained by Hyder Consulting to act as sub-consultants in the design of a replacement pair of Mitre Gates for the Port of Milford Haven.  The gates act as a lock for the port and measure 11.0 m high and with a clear opening of 22.8 m.  The gates were manufactured by Ravestein and the Company involvement included full supervision and inspection.

Subsequently the Company was retained by the Milford Haven Port Authority to design replacement operating equipment.

Port Of Barrow Mitre Gates
Retained by GEC Alsthom Neyrpic Ltd to undertake the full structural and M & E design for mitre gates for the Port of Barrow.  The gates were 11.0 m high and 33.0 m wide and weigh 190 tonne per leaf.

The design of the gates is to the highest standard as they are used as an integral part of the Trident submarine programme.

Dundreggan Hydroelectric Radial Gates
Retained by Enterprise Engineering Services Ltd to design replacement radial gates at Dundreggan.  The gates measured 8.6 m wide x 8.9 m high and were constructed in sections to allow transport to site and cope with limited crane access.  The work-scope included the full detailed workshop drawings.

St Helier Tilting Gates
Retained by the States of Jersey to develop a design for a pair of tilting gates, 15 m wide x 3.6 m high, for the new West of Albert Marina.  The scope included the outline design and specification development, this was achieved working closely with their own Public Services Department.  Subsequently the Company was retained to supervise the M & E works after a contract was awarded to Amec Marine and their Designers Posford Burns.

Kuwait Scientific Centre Tilting Gates
Retained by Mouchel Consulting Ltd to assist with the specification and subsequent approval process for a pair of Mitre Gates and a Tilting Gate for the Kuwait Scientific Centre.  The work included the mechanical and electrical specification as well as subsequent project supervision.

Ffestiniog Power Station Maintenance Gate
Retained by EPD Consultants to study the workings of an existing Maintenance gate at Ffestiniog Power Station and recommend improvements to the installation and controls.

Dinorwig Power Station Main Inlet Valves
Retained by EPD Consultants to investigate the operation of the main inlet valves at Dinorwig Hydroelectric Power Station and recommend ways in which they can be slowed down on certain occasions.

Derbendikhan ~Hydroelectric Radial Gates
Retained by Black and Veatch to advise of aspects of the refurbishment of three Radial Gates used for regulation of the main reservoir level.  Work included liaison with the Slovenian manufacturer and the site in the Middle East.

Cardiff Bay Barrage
Retained by County of Cardiff to provide operational and maintenance advice on aspects of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Sector and Fish-pass gates.

Sentosa Sector Gates, Singapore
Retained by Posford Haskoning to provide the outline design of the hydraulic system and controls for Sentosa North and South Lock, Sector Gates.  The controls allow both manual and automatic operation.  Operation includes remote operation via yachtsmen using radio signalling.
Also travelled to Singapore and commissioned each site successfully.

Ipswich Wet Dock Mitre Gate
Retained by the Environment Agency (through Black & Veatch) to inspect and oversee improvements and replacement to the wet dock mitre gate at Ipswich, which forms an integral part of the flood defences.
Subsequent work has included the study of a further six water control structures in the City.

Douglas Harbour Tilting Gate
Retained by The Isle of Man, Department of Transport to inspect and report on problems associated with an impounding tilting gate.  Problems were associated with ceramic-coated hydraulic cylinder rod.

Gate Design Code Check
Retained by a major Japanese international gate manufacturer to compare and report on differences between Japanese and European gate standards.  The final report included the parallel design of an existing Japanese gate, and lifting equipment, to the German DIN standard.

Gate Design Specification
Retained by Scottish Power to write a gate design specification for hydroelectric related gates.  The manual included all aspects of structural, mechanical and electrical design, manufacture and installation for hydropower applications.

Falmouth Dry Dock Gates
Retained by Hyder Consultants to provide an investigation and report on the steps necessary to re-introduce a set of dry dock mitre gates into an existing shipbuilding and repair facility in Falmouth.  The work also included a study into the necessary flooding pump system.

Craigenbay Intake Gate
Retained by Scottish Power (through Enterprise Engineering Services) to inspect a hydroelectric intake gate whose civil works are subject to Alkali Silica reaction, and report on modification that can extend its working life.  Modifications included the insitu refurbishment of roller paths.

Burry Port Harbour
Retained by Taylor and Sons Ltd to design a Tilting Impounding gate at Burry Port South Wales.  The gate is latched in the raised position and subject to high impact and reverse loading.

Leigh Barrier Survey and Refurbishment
Retained by the Environment Agency through Jacobs Babtie to undertake a condition survey of the Leigh Barrier radial gate sluices and associated control systems. The barrier is a Class A impoundment structure which is used to protect Tonbridge from flooding.  The study was accepted and subsequently extended to include the design of the refurbishment and upgrading works for which acted as Project Manager. 
The work scope included finite element analysis of the radial gates, new drive equipment and SCADA based controls.
Subsequently retained to act as NEC project manager.

Hayle Harbour Master Plan
Retained by Buro Happold, the lead consultant, for the creation of a master plan for the redevelopment of Hayle Harbour.  Provided specialist input on the choice of gates for the harbour entrance, sluice-ways, canal gates etc.

IFDS Surveys
Awarded framework contract in association with Halcrow for the delivery of Inspection of Flood Defence Structures (IFDS).  Over 20 gates surveyed to date with survey reports recommending required refurbishment works.

Mardyke Sluice Timber Mitre Gate
Retained by the Environment Agency through Halcrow to specify and project manage the installation of new timber mitre gates at Mardyke Sluice.

Washlands River Beam
Retained by the Environment Agency through Halcrow to assist with the replacement of vertical roller gates on the River Beam.

Flatford and Dedham
Retained by the Environment Agency through Halcrow to undertake the design of refurbishment works to Tilting gates at Flatford and Dedham Mills.  Subsequently project managed the refurbishment works via Contractors.

Inspection of Canvey Island Barriers
Retained by the Environment Agency, through Halcrow, as project manager for the survey of the three Canvey Island Flood barriers at Benfleet, Fobbing and Easthaven.
