Basin Gate at Wudam As Sahil Naval base, Oman - KGAL
The gate is a 22m span x 12m deep x 160 tonne Caisson type Flap gate in the entrance to the harbour Basin at a Naval Base in Wudam As Sahil, Oman. It is raised and lowered using a 130 tonne capacity hydraulically operated winch unit using wire ropes. The main reason for my visit was to carry out an assessment of the hydraulic equipment and give recommendations on work required to provide reliable operation for the next 10 years. My responsibilities also included assisting in supervising the un-stepping of the gate and moving into dry dock for maintenance and inspection. This procedure involved lifting the gate using compressed air to remove water from the bouyancy chambers and tilting it to the horizontal position when it was floated out into the harbour.
Network Rail - Oulton, Somerleyton & Reedham Ferry - KGAL
Retained by Network Rail through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake the M&E system design/refurbishment of three mechanically driven single-span railway swing bridges -
- Oulton, approx size: 38 x 8m over the Oulton Broad River at Oulton, Suffolk
- Somerleyton, approx size: 43 x 8m over the Broads River at Somerleyton, Suffolk
- Reedham Ferry, approx size: 43 x 8m over the Broads River at Reedham , Suffolk
Appointed project manager for this contract for Network rail which included site inspections of all three Network rail Bridges. Responsible for the hydraulic refurbishment of the three Network Rail Bridges which involved the refurbishment of wedge operating rods and linkages.
Hull Tidal Surge Barrier Refurbishment - KGAL
This is a prestigious Environment Agency Project for the future protection of Hull. The gate is 30m span x 10.6m deep and weighs 212 tonne. The project includes refurbishment of the hoisting system to include modern hydraulic drives and a gravity close feature to improve the reliability of the Barrier. KGAL were commissioned by Halcrow to project manage and technically review this EA Design and Build project. My responsibility includes reviewing the Hydraulic Designs produced by the main contractor and undertaking a Hazop Study into the various modes of operation.
Dartford Creek Barrier Refurbishment - KGAL
The Dartford Creek flood barrier consists of 2 vertical wheel gates, each 30m span by 5.2m high, designed to stack vertically, one on top of the other, to give when closed a total flood protection depth of 10.4m above the gate sill. Each section, weighing approximately 160 tons is raised and lowered utilising high tensile steel transmission chains powered from counterweight assisted hydraulic motor / gearbox drive assemblies. KGAL were commissioned to project manage and technically review this EA Design and Build project. My involvement was initially to assist with the commissioning of Phase 1 of the project which involved replacing the Chains. This involved utilising the existing hydraulic equipment which was originally supplied in 1987. Phase 2 which is due for completion in 2010 is to replace the Hydraulic and Electrical control systems and I was involved in the Tendering process up to contract award.
Pont-Y-Werin Bridge - KGAL
KGAL were retained by Dean & Dyball Ltd to undertake the M&E system designs for a hydraulically driven single-span foot / cycle track bascule bridge on the River Ely at Cardiff harbour. My involvement was to undertake preliminary design work on the hydraulic system which was then developed by the Hydraulic Contractor.
Bristol City Council, Cumberland Basin Mitre Gates and Controls Replacement - KGAL
Cumberland Basin is a flood defence and boat lock system consisting of two sets of mitre gates, two sets of penstocks and a swing bridge. The existing system uses a pumped water system to operate. The system was originally installed by I.K Brunel. My involvement was to design the Hydraulic System for Phase 2 of the project to operate the Gates and Sluices at Entrance Lock, undertake Factory Acceptance Testing of the equipment and assist with commissioning.
Media City Pedestrian Footbridge - KGAL
The project was to construct a new opening type pedestrian footbridge at Salford Quays to link the South East side of the Manchester Ship Canal to the North West where the Media City development is to be located. The bridge rotates 71 degrees about a pier mounted pivot point to allow vessels to pass through the channel using a Hydraulic Motor / gearbox drive assembly. KGAL were retained by Balfour Beatty to undertake the M & E system designs and provide a Hydraulic Simulation of the Bridge Operation. My involvement was to initially design the hydraulic system and then to prove its suitability to operate the Bridge under all the Design Load conditions using Simulation software.
Dublin Berth 26 Linkspan - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Berth 26 is a double deck linkspan raised and lowered using electric drive winches. Upper and lower deck separation can be varied using hydraulic cylinders to enable a variety of different vessels to use the berth. The upper deck is fitted with finger flaps operated using hydraulic cylinders to lower onto the upper deck of the vessel. Responsible for overseeing the design, factory acceptance testing (FAT), installation commissioning and sat testing of the complete hydraulic system.
Cardiff Queen Alexandra Docks - Lock Refurbishment - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
I was involved in the site installation and commissioning of replacement hydraulic power units, cylinders and pipe work to operate the mitre gates and sluices on the above project.
Whitby Swing Bridge Refurbishment - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
The bridge provides a very important link across the harbour in the centre of Whitby and has to be opened for vessels for a period of two hours either side of high tide. Responsible for the design, FAT, installation, commissioning and site acceptance testing (SAT) of new hydraulic power units as part of the refurbishment. A standby diesel engine was incorporated into the design to provide a full standby facility in the event of a mains power failure. The bridge was kept operational during the works.
Selby A19 Swing Bridge Refurbishment - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Selby Swing Bridge is a road bridge crossing the River Ouse at Selby. I was responsible for the design, FAT, installation, commissioning and SAT of a new hydraulic system to operate the jacking and nose bolt cylinders. This work had to be undertaken whilst keeping the bridges operational.
Humber Sea Terminal Berth 3 Linkspan - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Humber Sea Terminal is a Ro Ro Terminal on a floating pontoon providing a deepwater off-loading facility free from tide restraints and lock systems. I was responsible for modifying the existing hydraulic system to operate the New Berth 3.
Selby Canal Swing Bridge - Pressure Design
Mechanical and hydraulic design of an operating mechanism to open and close a swing bridge over the Selby Canal. The bridge was originally designed for manual slewing with a hand pump to operate the jacking wedges. I designed a linkage mechanism operated via a hydraulic cylinder which fitted underneath the bridge to automate the slewing operation and a new hydraulic power unit to provide the necessary power.
Hillhead Swing Bridge - Forth and Clyde Canal - Pressure Design
Erskine Ferry Swing Bridge - Forth and Clyde Canal - Pressure Design
Twechar Lift Bridge - Forth and Clyde Canal - Pressure Design
These three bridges over the Forth Clyde Canal in Scotland were refurbished as part of its re-opening as a millennium project in 1999/2000. the canal had been closed since 1961 and the bridges required extensive renovation including complete new operating systems. I was involved in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the hydraulic power units and cylinders.
Bell Weir Lock Gates - River Thames - Pressure Design
Romney Lock Gates - River Thames - Pressure Design
I was responsible for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of new control pedestals to replace the existing obsolete units.
