Dynamic Modelling and Simulation

Using the 20-Sim software KGAL has now successfully introduced hydraulic simulation to its expanding portfolio of services. Simulation enables a hydraulic system to be performance evaluated for a wide range of loading and ambient conditions before the machinery is built. It should be remembered that when structures are commissioned they can only be tested against the ambient conditions prevailing on the day.

The system enables the accurate application of mechanisms and loads including, without limit, inertia, gravity, external forces, wind loading (steady state and gusting), snow loading, actuators, buffers, etc. In addition the electrical control system can be simulated so that the sequencing and responses of the system can be fully integrated.

It has become commonplace to undertake such works on moving bridges and now the
technology has been successfully applied to water control structures. Recent flood defence structures that KGAL has simulated include the Benfleet Barrier, Dartford Creek Barrier, Nakdong 22 rising sector gate and Han River rising sector gate.

Simulation can find out areas of control instability, cavitation, etc. With some component lead times being as long as 26 weeks, it is usually cost effective to avoid problems than solve them on site and simulation is a significant new tool to assist in this area. In addition there is a significant safety improvement as the system can be shown to operate within its safe operating limits under all conditions, including over-load. Wherever safety is paramount, hydraulic simulation can provide additional assurance.

The rapid-build nature of the hydraulic simulation system enables alternative solutions to problems to be tried out. This enables cost-effective solutions to be found.
