Career History:
  • Trained as a Mechanical Engineer via a full EITB apprenticeship with Newton Chambers Engineering Ltd. Attended Technical College one day a week studying for Mechanical Engineering Technicians Certificate.
  • Took up a position as Project Engineer in Technical Sales Department, Water Control Division. Responsibilities included Conceptual Design, Estimating, Tender preparation and submission (technical & commercial), contract negotiation. Products include Gates for Flood Defence, River Control, Harbours, Marinas, Hydropower and Irrigation.
  • Seconded to Outside Erection Department at Dinorwic Pumped Storage Power Station as Site Engineer. Assisted Site Manager with forward planning of site activities provided technical support and supervision during installation of Headworks, Tailworks and Reservoir Control Gates.
  • Returned to Tender Design Department. Responsibilities now focused on Conceptual Design and Technical Proposals.
  • Moved to Don Sharpe Engineering. General engineering company involved in Fabrication and Site Installation of Capital Equipment, predominantly for the Iron & Steel, Cement and Power Industries. Joined as Engineering Sales Manager, progressed to General Manager and Engineering Director, responsible for Technical & Commercial performance on all contracts, including "hands on" Site Management of critical path installation contracts.
  • Recruited by Qualter, Hall & Co. Ltd., as Engineering Sales Manager (Mechanical Handling). Responsible for generating new business opportunities through existing and new clients/business sectors. Using previous experience, helped establish the company as a leading supplier of Maritime/Water Control Equipment including Ro-Ro Linkspans, Moving Bridges and Gates. Role expanded to include Mining and Hoisting Divisions.
  • Joined Kenneth Grubb Associates Limited (KGAL)  in April 2006. Consulting Engineering work in the Maritime, Water Control and Moving Bridge sectors.

Relevant Project Experience

 

Sultanate of Oman Basin Gate Refurbishment - KGAL
Site supervision for unstepping procedure of Basin Guard Gate at Said Bin Sultan Naval Base.  Including supervision and co-ordination of Navy Diving team, MOD Engineering team, Navy towage and berthing on Shiplift facility.  Gate unstepped and removed to Shiplift using compressed air to deballast the structure.  Inspection report submitted as basis for gate refurbishment. 

River Hull Tidal Surge Barrier - KGAL
ECC Supervisor for improvements to Gate and Operating System.  Site work includes refurbishment and painting of the 212 Tonnes gate structure, removal and replacement of complete gate hoisting equipment, braking system and controls.  Responsibilities include pre-tender programme issue, input to site methodology, contractor evaluation and site supervision over 2 year period.

Daventry Canal Locks and Boat Lift - KGAL
Member of Hyder project team, advisor on gates and M&E aspects at prefeasibility stage.

Selby Canal Floodgate - KGAL
ECC Supervisor for replacement of Selby Canal Floodgate.  Works included removal of existing gate, de-silting and dewatering of gate recess, installation of new larger gate c/w associated guides, sealing frames, wire rope winches and control system.  Navigation passage maintained throughout works period.

Portora Barrage - Enniskillen - KGAL
Site inspection and survey of 4 Lift and Turn Barrage Gates. Preparation & submission of Site Installation Procedure for sequential replacement of all 4 gates.

Hull Marina Lock Gates - KGAL
Site Inspection and Survey of 2 pairs of Sector Lock Gates, embedded sealing frames and Rope winch operating system. Input to work scope specification document.

River Hull Tidal Surge Barrier - KGAL
Nominated as ECC Site Supervisor for removal and replacement of Gate Hoisting equipment, braking system and controls. Responsibilities include pre-tender programme issues, input to site methodology and contractor evaluation.

Boston Navigation Link - KGAL
Project Director through feasibility study for navigation lock including sector gates, mitre gates and pumping stations.

Flatford Mill Tilting Gate - KGAL
Site Supervisor for removal, refurbishment and re-installation of hydraulically operated bascule type, tilting gate.

H.R Wallingford-Foster Wheeler-Brunei Liquid Natural Gas - KGAL
Site inspection of 81 existing sluice gates on cooling water system, specification of replacement gates, replacement methodology, assistance with tender evaluation and supervision of site works in Brunei.

Aberthaw Power Station - KGAL
Site inspection of Bulkhead gates, preparation & submission of condition report. Recommendations for replacement gates.

Whitby Harbour Swing Bridge - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Full Mechanical Site Survey and Proposal for Refurbishment of Double Leaf Swing Bridge.

Spondon Sluice, River Derwent - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Full Structural & Mechanical survey of 5, existing, "Stoney" Roller sluice gates, and proposal for replacement with Cantilever Wheel gates. Including installation of stoplogs and dewatering of gate sluice ways on site.

Ffestiniog Hydro Power Station - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Management of proposals and negotiation of contracts for; Design & Supply of new Forebay Bulkhead Gate, Refurbishment of Numerous other Forebay Bulkhead Gates, removal from site, refurbishment and reinstallation of 2 Intake Guard Gates.

Stena Holyhead - Berth 3 Ro-Ro Linkspan - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Management of proposals and negotiation of contracts for replacement of main upper and lower deck hydraulic lifting cylinders, removal and reinstallation of cylinders on site (including craneage), refurbishment of 1 existing cylinder and provision of 3 new cylinders.

Altmouth Pumping Station - Sluice Gates - Qualter Hall & Co Ltd
Worked with Client (E.A. North West Region) and Engineering Consultant (Halcrow) to identify scope of work and formulate contract to refurbish 4 existing, vertical lift, wheeled, sluice gates and associated lift screw operating mechanisms. Contract completed against critical path programme.

Shoreham Port - Marina Lock - Don Sharpe Engineering
Manufacture and installation of Stoplogs and guides for new marina lock. Work carried out as subcontractor to GEC Neyrpic (Lock gate and M&E main contractor).

Victoria Dock - Hull - Don Sharpe Engineering
Design, manufacture and installation of Stoplogs to suit existing civil grooves. The stoplogs were designed with a lateral locating device to centralise each subsequent stoplog unit on top of the one installed immediately below.

Teesside Slag - Ship Loader - Don Sharpe Engineering
Prepare tender, negotiate and manage contract to replace Internal Shuttle Conveyor to telescopic, traversing, ship loader, including supervision of site installation.

Blue Circle, Dunbar - New Clinker Cooler - Don Sharpe Engineering
Prepare tender, negotiate and manage contract to replace complete Cement Clinker Cooler, including site management during works shutdown period. Work carried out as subcontractor to BMH - Claudius Peters.

Avesta Stainless Steel - Furnace Exhaust Duct - Don Sharpe Engineering
Replace arc furnace exhaust gas ducting from furnace to filter plant at 50m above ground level.  Responsible for preparation of tender, negotiation of contract, project management and site supervision.  Scope included design, fabrication, and removal of existing duct and installation of new duct including provision of cranage.

Burnham-on-Sea - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Conceptual design, tender preparation and contract negotiation for side hinged vehicular access flood defence gate.

River Wreake - Control Structure - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Conceptual design, tender preparation and contract negotiation for fishbelly flap gate and associated electro-hydraulic control system.

River Fane Control Structure - Dundalk, Ireland - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed tender design and cost estimate for 2 fishbelly flap gates for incorporation into overall control structure proposal.

National Water Sports Centre - Holme Pierpoint, Nottingham - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Proposed alternative gate design for overshot regulating gate on international standard canoe slalom course. The original tender specification suggested a fishbelly type gate but this posed inherent risks for the canoeists passing over the gate adjacent to the exposed operating cylinder. The successful proposal was for a bascule type gate, with all operating equipment in a sealed chamber outside the water course.
Also completed tender design for 1 piece wheeled stopgate, used to isolate the control gate and slalom course under full flow conditions.

Maentwrog Dam - Power Station Intake - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed tender design for complete intake gate system comprising; Intake Control Wheel Gate with Hydraulic Cylinder operation. Bulkhead "Guard" Gate and Removable Trashracks with Automatic Lifting beam.  Also Bottom Outlet Penstock Liner with flange mounting and access platform to suit Discharge Regulating Valve.

Gillingham Marina - New Lock - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed tender design and prepared cost estimate for 1 pair of Outer Sector Lock gates, 1 pair of Inner Mitre Lock gates c/w integral sluice gates and 1 set of Stoplogs c/w sealing frames.

Ramsgate Inner Harbour - Entrance Gate - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed conceptual design for new Bottom Hinged, Torsionally Rigid, harbour entrance gate to replace existing Mitre Caisson gates. New gate operated with 2 Hydraulic cylinders but designed to operate on either cylinder with the other removed, to give system redundancy. Seals designed to operate against civil faces across cill and up vertical sides of entrance. The new civil works and gate were installed without dewatering the dock.

Padstow Inner Harbour - Entrance Gate - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed tender design, prepared cost estimate and tender submission for Bottom Hinged, Torsionally Rigid, harbour entrance gate c/w public access footbridge across top.

Victoria Dock, Hull - Half Tide Basin, Impounding Gate - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Working with Engineering Consultant, Alan Wood & Partners, completed conceptual design for Dock Impounding gate, on behalf of site developer, Bellway Homes and Hull City Council. Prepared full cost estimate for gate and operating equipment and negotiated contract with Client.

Salford Quays - Manchester - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Completed tender design and cost estimate for 2 pairs of Mitre Lock Gates and associated operating system. The gates incorporated conventional captive hinges and central locking bolt arrangements to withstand a limited off seating head.

Castle Mills Sluice - River Foss, York - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
Conducted full condition survey of existing vertical lift sluice gate and prepared submission of recommendations for improvement c/w indicative costs.

Dinorwic Power Station - Llanberis, North Wales - Newton Chambers Engineering and Kvaerner Boving
6 months secondment as Site Engineer, during power station construction.

o    3 tailrace wheel gates c/w hydraulic operating system
o    2 sets of tailrace stoplogs
o    1 set of removable tailrace screens
