Cley Flood Defence gates

Cley Flood Defence, Norfolk

KGAL were appointed by Halcrow to design and project manage the provision of replacement flood defence gates for Cley-next-the-sea, in North Norfolk.

The village was severely affected by the 1953 floods, with tidal defences constructed thereafter to prevent a repeat catastrophe. The replacement composite mitre gates with associated hydraulic operating equipment were provided by TEMA Engineering Limited as part of the Environment Agency's continuing investment to improved flood defences.

KGAL tailored the gate design to incorporate surplus Greenheart timber from groin replacement works thus avoiding the need for more tropical hardwood, in line with the Environment Agency's procurement policies.
