Caisson Gate re-furbishment, Milford Docks

Milford Docks is a thriving commercial port, with a significant volume of commercial and pleasure craft users. The Dock is served by a lock originally protected entirely by mitre gates.

The lock has been upgraded to include the use of an existing Caisson Gate which has been modified so as to be permanently hinged at one end. This gate winches itself open and closed using a tethered chain system and an on board hydraulically operated windlass.

The Caisson gate also incorporates on board flooding and pumping equipment.

Marine and Port Services Ltd won the contract to refurbish the Caisson Gate, and appointed Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd to undertake the complete electrical design, including the production of the electrical control panels.

The control system employs a Mitsubishi Programmable logic controller which directly regulates all aspects of on board equipment using software developed directly by Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd.
