Cumberland Basin, Bristol

KGAL were appointed by Arup, as specialist sub-consultants for a major modernisation of the Lock Gate and Swing Bridge operating systems at Cumberland Basin in Bristol, on behalf of Bristol City Council.

KGAL's scope of works includes inspection and evaluation of existing plant and equipment and preparation of technical specifications for refurbishment or renewal of:

Operating systems for two pairs of Mitre Caisson Gates and associated ground sluices at the Entrance Lock; Operating systems for Junction Lock Swing Bridge, Upper Lock Gates and associated ground sluices; Junction Lock flood defence Mitre Gates; Underfall Yard sluices and operating gear Nova's Dam sluices and operating gear; Brunel Lock Dam sluices and operating gear

In addition, KGAL's scope was extended to include;

Inspection and condition assessment of Junction Lock gates and Floodgates; Subsequent design and detailing of replacement gates; Works inspection of new gates during manufacture; Project Management and Site supervision during installation of new equipment

Many of the structures within the Cumberland Basin (also known as the Floating Harbour) are of significant historical importance, with the Underfall Sluice being Brunel's first engineering commission in the City of Bristol.
