Bascule Bridge, Sovereign Harbour

Sovereign Harbour

Sovereign Harbour is the largest, man-made, land-locked harbour in the United Kingdom. The harbour complex is served by two, twin bascule type pedestrian access bridges and an emergency vehicle access bridge to enable the free flow of people and traffic.

Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd worked directly with the specialist contractor to develop the structural, mechanical and electrical design for all the bridges, and their associated control and operating systems. The bridges are part of a distributed control system and can be operated locally or centrally from a central control building up to 400 m from the furthest bridge.

The bridge spans were standardised at 15 m, and the developed design was co-ordinated with the Client's Architect to ensure a slender and pleasing appearance.

The bridges were designed to the recommended loadings of BS5400 and are also capable of emergency operation in the event of loss of electrical mains power.

SPECIALIST CONTRACTOR: GEC Alsthom Hydropower Ltd.

CLIENT: Crumbles Harbour Village Ltd.
