Swing bridge & Bascule bridge - Exeter BridgesFollowing on from our initial Site Survey and Condition report, KGAL was appointed by Devon County Council to provide specifications, works information package and M & E project management for a programme of refurbishment works to 2 moving bridges, one bascule bridge and one swing bridge, over Exeter Canal.

Built in the 1970's, the work on the bascule bridge includes; a new hydraulic power unit and stainless steel hydraulic pipe work, refurbished bearings and pins with new improved lubrication system, 2 refurbished main lift cylinders, conversion of nose and tail bolt operation to hydraulic cylinder actuation, local areas of deck strengthening.

The swing bridge is a much older structure dating back to the 1930's, with the work scope including; new pintle bearing, new rack & pinion slew arrangement, new tail wheels and support track, substantial modifications to the bridge support cams and wedges, new variable speed electric drive and a new  retractable pedestrian footway to one side.

In addition both bridges  received new corrosion protection and a new integrated PLC control system housed in the refurbished control building.
