Relevant Project Experience - Kenneth Grubb Associates Ltd
Sennen RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) Launch Platform Retained by Opus International Consultants Ltd to undertake/check the structural calculations and M&E systems for the design of a tipping and swinging cradle for the Tamar class lifeboat in Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station, Cornwall. Responsibilities included - tipping cradle steel structure calculations, mechanical drive system calculations (e.g. slewing hydraulic cylinders, lifting hydraulic cylinders and roller).
Te Wero Lifting Bridge, Auckland city, New Zealand Retained by Hyder Consulting (UK) Ltd to undertake the M&E system designs for a distinctive single-span winch/rope operated double-leaf bridge, with energy recovery system, for the Auckland city council bridge design competition. Subsequently, this design was chosen as the winner of the international design competition by a panel of independent judges. Responsibilities included - drive mechanism design/development, procurement and drive system calculations (e.g. rack-pinion system, counterweight system, winch/pulley and cables, energy recovery system and bearing calculations).
Ipswich Wet Dock Flood Gates Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake/check the structural calculations and M&E systems for the design of a Mitre gate on the River Orwell. Responsibiliti included - gate steel structure calculations check, drive mechanism calculations check, lifting provisions design and calculations. Howbury Lifting Bridge Retained by ProLogis Corporate through Beckett Rankine Limited to design and undertake the structural calculations and M&E systems for the designs for an hydraulically driven double-leaf Dutch style bascule bridge on the River Cray. The plant room of this highway bridge with foot/cycle track was fitted inside the pier/towers aboe the high water level within the limited available pier width. Responsibilities included - option study, layout design, steel structure calculations, procurement, team management and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydraulic system, counterweight system, buffers and bearing calculations).
Special Purpose Lift Retained by a client to undertake the outline design of a special purpose lift for a prestigious European development. The device is capable of lifting 30 passengers to the height of 80 meters with the viewing platform giving a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view. Athens, Greece.
Darent River Crossing Retained by London Borough of Bexley through Mouchel Parkman Ltd to undertake the feasibility study and layout design of a moving Bridge on the Darent River. The study provided the client with two options for moving bridges, a swing and a bascule bridge. The swing and double-span sub-options for each bridge type were analysed and compared. The optimised double -span designs for the foot/cycle track bridge were presented. Kent, England.
Cumberland Basin Swing Bridge Retained by Bristol City Council to undertake the design supervision on the Cumberland Basin single-span highway swing bridge with foot/cylce track at the Bristol City Docks Floating Harbour. The operating mechanism has been upgraded from water to oil hydraulic systems. Bristol, England.
Cley Mitre Gates Walkways Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake the design for a GRP walkway over the Mitre Gates at the Cley Next The Sea. Norfolk, England.
Movanagher Swing Bridge Retained by Waterways Ireland through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake/check the M&E system calculations for the design of a mechanically driven single-span foot/cycle track swing bridge at the Movanagher Lock. Londonderry (Derr), Northern Ireland.
Pont-Y-Werin Bridge Retained by Dean & Dyball Ltd to undertake the M&E system desgins for an hydraulically driven single-span foot/cycle track bascule bridge on the River Ely at the Cardiff harbour. Cardiff, Wales.
Self Erecting Flood Barrier Retained by Repel Wales Ltd to undertake the structural calculations for a automatic, self-erecting, free-standing flood barrier for domestic/commercial use which requires no external supply. England.
Dedham Sluice Gate Gearbox Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to investigate the gearbox failure of the sluice gate at Dedham Mill and to submit a new design. The calculations were undertaken to ensure that the actuator can be used in conjunction with the gearbox to safely lift and lower the gate on a rack and pinion mechanism. Dedham, England.
Tewkes Creek Sluice Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake calculations for the Tewkes Creek Sluice 4th culvert blanking plate and Tewkes Creek Sluice orifice design. The Canvey Island Tewkes Creek Sluice prevents tidal waters flowing into Tewkes Creek and it is also the means by which flood waters contained withing the Tewkes Creek reservoir are released into the sea at appropriate tide levels. Canvey Island, England.
Luton Town Gate Retained by Enterprise Engineering Services Ltd to undetake the drive system design for a hydraulically driven artistic entrance gate at the Luton Carnival Arts Centre. Luton, England
