Chatham Marina Bridge - KGAL

Retained by MDL Marinas Group PLC to investigate the drive system failure of an hydraulically driven single-span bascule bridge (approx. size: 120 tonnes (est), 10 m  x 9 m) at Chatham Marina, Chatham, England.  Responsibilities included: project manager, site survey, report writing, general drive system calculations.

Dunalastair Flood Gates - KGAL

Retained by Scottish and Southern Energy Plc to undertake the design/calculations for Dunalastair Dam Flood Gates (apprix size: 18 tonnes, 7.6 m X 8.1 m) to be deployed across the Dunalastair Dam, Strath Tummel, Scotland.  Responsibilities included: steel structure design/calculations for some of the gate members/connections for various load cases.

Cotswold Swing Bridges - KGAL

Retained by Stroud District Council through Halcrow Group Limited to develop a design and build specification for the required mechanical and electrical works for three swing bridges (Ocean Bridge, Gas Works Bridge, and Lodgemore Bridge) across Cotswold Canal (approx. size 26 tonnes, 12 x 5 m).  Responsibilities included: project manager, drive mechanism layout design, outline design calculations, site survey, general and functional M&E specifications.

Hellefoss Gates - KGAL

Retained by HMR Engineering AS to undertake the design/calculations for four draft tube gates (approx. size: 3.5 tonnes, 4.5 x 4 m) to be deployed across the River Drammenselven for Hellefoss Power Station, Drammen, Norway.  Responsibilities included: steel structure design/calculations check.

Gamlebrufoss Gates - KGAL

Retained by HMR Engineering AS to undertake the design/calculations for four stoplogs (whaling beam approx. size: 12 tonnes, 18 x 1 m) to be deployed across three Radial Gates and one Sector Gate on the River Numedalslagen, Konsberg, Norway.  Responsibilities included: layout design, steel structure design/calculations (e.g. whaling beam, brackets, aluminium needles, special fixings).

St Mary's Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Chatham Maritime Trust to update the operational requirements of a hydraulically driven single span bascule bridge (approx. size: 70 tonnes (est), 17 x 12 m) and to supervise the maintenance/operation of the bridge.  Responsibilities included: site survey, drive mechanism study.

Wynyard Crossing - KGAL

Retained by Hyder Consulting (UK) Ltd to undertake the M&E system designs for a double-span winch/rope operated bascule bridge (approx. size: 40 tonnes, 50 x 5 m) for the Auckland city council, New Zealand.  Responsibilities included: project manager, drive mechanism design/development, procurement, and drive system calculations.

Victoria Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by London Borough of Newham through Ringway Jacobs Ltd to undertake the feasibility study for connecting the east side of the ExCel estate to Pontoon Dock DLR station (approx. size: 90 x 5 m).  Responsibilities included: tender stage M&E system design, investigate design options.

Tilbury Barrier - KGAL

Retained by the Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to carry out a mechanical condition survey/inspection and appraisal of various aspects of the Tilbury Flood Defence Barrier (approx. size: 200 tonnes, 33 x 18 m) located on the River Thames.  Responsibilities included: lifting equipment and steel structure design and calculations.

Media City Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd to undertake the M&E system design of a mechanically driven asymmetric single-span cable stayed swing foot bridge (approx. size: 800 tonnes, 83 & 7 m) across the Manchester Ship Canal at Salford Quays.  Responsibilities included: acting project manager, layout design, steel structure calculations, procurement and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. gear-pinion system, gearbox, motor, buffers nose/tail bolts, jacks, bearing/pintle and mounting stool calculations).

Somerleyton Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Network Rail through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake the M&E system design/refurbishment of a mechanically driven single-span railway swing bridge (approx. size: 43 x 8 m) over the Broads River at Somerleyton, Suffolk.  Responsibilities included: site survey, steel structure and drive mechanism calculations check.

Oulton Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Network Rail through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake the M&E system design/refurbishment of a mechanically driven single-span railway swing bridge (approx. size: 38 x 8 m) over the Oulton Broad River at Oulton, Suffolk.  Responsibilities included: site survey, steel structure and drive mechanism calculations check.

Reedham Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Network Rail through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake the M&E system design/refurbishment of a mechanically driven single-span railway swing bridge (approx. size: 43 x 8 m) over the  Broads River at Reedham, Norfolk.  Responsibilities included: site survey, steel structure and drive mechanism calculations check.

Luton Town Gate - KGAL

Retained by Enterprise Engineering Services Ltd to undetake the torque drive system design for a hydraulically driven artistic entrance gate (approx size: 1 tonne, 5 x 4 m) at the Luton Carnival Arts Centre.  Responsibilities included: layout design, bracket design and calculations, and drive mechanism calculations (e,g, hydraulic system, and bearing calculations).

Tewkes Creek Sluice - KGAL

Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake  the design/calculations for the Tewkes Creek Sluice 4th culvert (approx size: 1.3 m diameter, 30 m) blanking plate and Tewkes Creek Sluice orifice design.  The Canvey Island Tewkes Creek Sluice prevents tidal waters flowing into Tewkes Creek and it is also the means by which flood waters contained withing the Tewkes Creek reservoir are released into the sea at appropriate tide levels.  Responsibilities included: layout design, plate and orifice design and calculations.

Dedham Sluice Gate Gearbox - KGAL

Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to investigate the gearbox failure of the sluice gate (approx. size: 0.4 tonne, 2 x 1 m) at Dedham Mill and to submit a new design.  The calculations were undertaken to ensure that the actuator can be used in conjunction with the gearbox to safely lift and lower the gate on a rack and pinion mechanism.  Responsibilities included: layout design and drive mechanism calculations (e.g.worm-gear system, drive motors).

Self Erecting Flood Barrier - KGAL

Retained by Repel Wales Ltd to undertake the structural calculations for a automatic, self-erecting, free-standing flood barrier (approx. size: 24 unites of 2 x 2.5m) for domestic/commercial use which requires no external power supply.  Responsibilities included: steel structure calculations for panels and connections.

Pont-Y-Werin Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Dean & Dyball Ltd to undertake the M&E system desgins for a hydraulically driven single-span foot/cycle track bascule bridge (approx size: 46 tonnes, 32 x 4.5 m) on the River Ely at the Cardiff harbour.  Responsibilities included: project manager, layout design, steel structure calculations, procurement, and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydraulic system, buffers and bearing calculations).

Movanagher Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Waterways Ireland through AMCO (Amalgamated Construction Ltd) to undertake/check the M&E system calculations for the design of a mechanically driven single-span foot/cycle track swing bridge (approx. size: 23 tonnes, 12 x 3 m) at the Movanagher Lock.  Responsibilities included: layout design, steel structure calculations, and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. gear-pinion system, counterweight system, wheels and bearing calculations).

Cley Mitre Gates Walkways - KGAL

Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake the design for a GRP walkway (approx. size: 0.8 tonne, 8 x 1 m) over the Mitre Gates at the Cley Next The Sea.  Responsibilities included: layout design, steelstructure calculations.

Cumberland Basin Swing Bridge - KGAL

Retained by Bristol City Council to undertake the design supervision on the Cumberland Basin single-span highway swing bridge with foot/cylce track  (approx. size: 600 tonnes, 47 x 12 m) at the Bristol City Docks Floating Harbour.  The operating mechanism has been upgraded from water to oil hydraulic systems.  Responsibilities included: hydraulic/mechanical calculations, CAT3 check, drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydraulic system, buffers and bearing/pintle calculations).

Darent River Crossing - KGAL

Retained by London Borough of Bexley through Mouchel Parkman Ltd to undertake the feasibility study and layout design of a moving Bridge (approx. size: 75 tonnes, 32 x 5 m) on the Darent River.  The study provided the client with three options for moving bridges, a swing, a bascule and a vertical lift bridge.  The single and double-span sub-options for each bridge type were analysed and compared.  The optimised double -span designs for the foot/cycle track bridge were presented.  Responsibilities included: option study, layout design, steel structure calculations, and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydrualic system, counterweight system and bearing calculations).

Special Purpose Lift - KGAL
Retained by a client to undertake the outline design of a special purpose lift for a prestigious European development.  The device (approx. size: 12 tonnes, 16 m diameter) is capable of lifting 30 passengers to the height of 80 meters with the viewing platform giving a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view in Athens, Greece.  Responsibilities included: option study, layout design, steel structure calculations, and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydrualic system, winch/pulley and cables and counterweight system).

Howbury Lifting Bridge - KGAL
Retained by ProLogis Corporate through Beckett Rankine Limited to design and undertake the structural calculations and M&E systems for the designs for an hydraulically driven double-leaf Dutch style bascule bridge (approx. size: 600tonnes, 18 x 14 m) on the River Cray in Kent.  The plant room of this highway bridge with foot/cycle track was fitted inside the pier/towers above the high water level within the limited available pier width.  Responsibilities included: option study, layout design, steel structure calculations, procurement, team management and drive mechanism calculations (e.g. hydraulic system, counterweight system, buffers and bearing calculations).

Ipswich Wet Dock Flood Gates - KGAL
Retained by Environment Agency through Halcrow Limited to undertake/check the structural calculations and M&E systems for the design of a Mitre gate (approx size: 90 tonnes, 10 x 16 m) on the River Orwell, Suffolk.  Responsibilities included: gate steel structure calculations check, drive mechanism calculations check, lifting provisions design and calculations.

Te Wero Lifting Bridge - KGAL
Retained by Hyder Consulting (UK) Ltd to undertake the M&E system designs for a distinctive single-span winch/rope operated double-leaf bridge (approx. size: 400 tonnes, 70 x 20 m), with energy recovery system, for the Auckland city council bridge design competition.  Subsequently, this design was chosen as the winner of the international design competition by a panel of independent judges.  Responsibilities included: drive mechanism design/development, procurement and drive system calculations (e.g. rack-pinion system, counterweight system, winch/pulley and cables, energy recovery system and bearing calculations).

Sennen RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) Launch Platform - KGAL
Retained by Opus International Consultants Ltd to undertake/check the structural calculations and M&E systems for the design of a hydraulically driven tipping and swinging cradle for the Tamar class lifeboat (approx. size: 34 tonnes, 16 m long) in Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station, Cornwall.  Responsibilities included: tipping cradle steel structure calculations, mechanical drive system calculations (e.g. slewing hydraulic cylinders, lifting hydraulic cylinders and roller).
